The municipality and county seat of Nolan County, Texas, United States, is Sweetwater. Texas is located 123 miles southeast of Lubbock and 40 miles west of Abilene, TX area. The top wind power-producing area in the Western Hemisphere is centered around Sweetwater. It is often referred to as the “Wind Turbine Capital of Texas.” The Roscoe Wind Farm is the biggest wind farm in Texas.

The name “Sweetwater” is the English version of “Mobeetie” in the Kiowa language. Blue Goose began as a trading post on nearby Sweetwater Creek in 1877. When the Texas and Pacific Railway arrived in 1881, it moved to its current location. Sweetwater was founded in 1884, but a bad snowstorm in 1885 and a drought in 1886–87 stopped it from growing. The resulting destruction was the setting for Dorothy Scarborough’s 1925 book The Wind. When the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway opened in 1911, it helped the city get back on its feet as a hub for cattle, cotton, and wool. In the 1920s, oil reserves in the area were mined, and since the 1940s, gypsum, sand, and clay reserves have been taken from the city’s manufacturing sector. Just west of the city, on the site of Avenger Field, is a campus of Texas State Technical College, located just west of the city. The Sweetwater, Trammell, and Oak Creek lakes in the area are kept for water supply and recreation. The Nolan County Coliseum in Newman Park has fairs, expos, and indoor rodeos every year. During the annual Rattlesnake Roundup, real snakes are caught and used to make snakebite serum and for medical research. It is a fun fair and carnival with information on rattlesnakes. The Indian artifacts and pioneer history of the region are shown at the Pioneer City County Museum.
