VFW Post 76 was founded in 1917 by the Veterans of the Spanish American War. It is recognized as the oldest and largest Post in Texas. The facility is more than just a social center, and it is also a place to serve and honor our veterans. It is also known as the Petty House. In 2017, VFW Post 76 was designated as a Texas State Historical landmark and a San Antonio Historical landmark. The locale is important to the history of Texas and the United States. The Veterans of Foreign Wars, or VFW, is an organization that provides support for veterans and their families. One way they do this is through a variety of programs to support the community, encourage patriotism, and help veterans. The Community Programs include scholarship programs for youth and student veteran support. The Encouraging Patriotism program hosts commemorative ceremonies for patriotic days such as Memorial Day and Veterans Day. The Veteran Programs offer homeless veterans support and assistance with applying for benefits. By offering these programs, the institution is committed to helping veterans and their families in the San Antonio community.
In addition to being a social club for members, the locale provides a variety of resources and programs for local veterans. For example, they assist veterans with enrolling in Medicare and accessing city programs for home repair and rehabilitation. Additionally, the management helps to survive spouses access VA benefits and pension resources. It actively works to ensure that veteran-owned businesses have access to the resources they require to be successful.
This setting has three different event spaces available for rental: the Lee Swain Carriage Hall, the Ed Baldwin Ballroom, and the Farr Cigar Deck & Picnic Tables. The Lee Swain Carriage Hall is a perfect choice for weddings, receptions, and other large events. It features a grand staircase, chandeliers, and a dance floor. Business conferences, seminars, and meetings are perfect at the Ed Baldwin Ballroom. It has a stage, AV equipment, and plenty of space for seating. The Farr Cigar Deck & Picnic Tables are perfect for more casual gatherings like birthday parties, barbecues, and family reunions. It has picnic tables, a grill, and a beautiful view of the river.
